Acireale barocca

Acireale, erede dell’antica Akis e dei miti di Aci e Galatea, è una delle più antiche cittadine alle falde dell’Etna, famosa per il tipico barocco “Acese”. Dalla Villa Belvedere passeggiamo lungo l’elegante prospettiva di Corso Umberto e arriviamo in Piazza Duomo tra chiese e palazzi di notevole pregio artistico e architettonico. Addentrandoci per le vie del centro storico le decine di sculture-mascherone in pietra lavica o in pietra arenaria che animano i balconi e i portali dei palazzi ci trascinano a seguirne il senso e a goderne l’accesa espressività. Fauci aperte, occhi spalancati, profili insolenti e beffardi, i mascheroni, incisi in pietra bianca o in pietra lavica dagli abili “lapidum incisores”, costituiscono una delle peculiarità del barocco acese, simbolo di prestigio e per allontanare ogni forma di male. Le decorazioni grottesche le ritroviamo nella colorata parata del Carnevale acese, con i suoi personaggi allegorici di cartapesta creati dagli abili artigiani acesi. Proseguendo la passeggiata, a pochi passi da Piazza Duomo, ci immergiamo tra i vivaci colori del mercato rionale a curiosare tra la frutta e la verdura più tipica, come i violacei cavoli trunzi di Aci, presidio Slow Food. Girato l’angolo ammiriamo la ricca facciata barocca Basilica Collegiata di San Sebastiano ornata di putti giocosi. Una breve pausa al chiosco con un bicchierone di seltz limone e sale per dissetarci e si riparte. La passeggiata prosegue verso la Biblioteca e Pinacoteca Zelantea, gioiello culturale poco conosciuto ma ricco di volumi e dipinti di elevato pregio storico e artistico. Nelle vicinanze merita una visita anche il Museo dei Pupi siciliani per le storie e i pupi finemente decorati che ricordano leggenda di Orlando e Rinaldo. Le atmosfere barocche proseguono nella cucina e nei dolci tipici. Qui le fresche e profumate granite, gustate ad ogni ora del giorno, sono un’istituzione e ogni anno vengono festeggiate dal Festival “La Nivarata. Ogni angolo offre l’occasione per un esclusiva pausa enogastronomica, dallo street food cripelle e arancini, ai sapori della cucina popolare e delle ricette dei Monzù, al tripudio di dolci e gelati.

ACIREALE, THE BAROQUE CITY

Acireale, heiress to the myth of Akis and Galatea, is the ancient town at the foot of Mount Etna famous for its baroque and for La Timpa, the striking lava escarpment which falls sheer into the sea.
Starting from the Belvedere gardens, and following the elegant Corso Umberto, we reach Piazza Duomo, passing through churches and artistically noteworthy palaces.
